Gochujang Sauce – Spicy & Sweet Korean Sauce

Gochujang sauce is a Korean dipping sauce made from Korean red chilli paste, soy sauce, vinegar and any kind of sweetener. This sauce is a simple but very impressive and delicious sauce used to flavour many Korean dish. This sauce is a staple in Korea but has a great following all around the world.

Gochujang sauce has a bold, spicy, sweet, umami and smoky flavour. This sauce can elevate any dish to different dimension. The sauce is primarily use to flavour different rice dishes like Bibimbap and Korean fried rice. But can be use for multiple dishes and there no set rule for the usage. This sauce also goes very well with fried chicken and chicken wings, I generally prefer this Korean sauce over barbecue sauce for my chicken wings.

Base of Gochujang sauce

The base of this sauce is gochujang paste which is a thick red chilli paste. This paste contains red chillies, fermented soy bean and glutinous rice. Sometimes rice can be substituted with starchy potatoes or barley. This paste take around one month to make, since it involves fermentation which is time consuming process. So majority of Korean buy this paste from local grocery.

Uses of Gochujang

Gochujang is a versatile ingredient in Korean cuisine and is used in making of multiple dishes including many stews, soups and rice preparation. Especially this sauce is main component in Bibimbap, a popular Korean rice dish which is sometimes referred as “National Dish of Korea”. But this sauce can be a good substitute of ketchup and sriracha sauce. You can use it as a dip and also as spread. Just add tablespoon of gochujang paste to mayo and your gochujang mayo is ready. Its a multi purpose condiment and can be use can flavour literally any dish.

Making of Gochujang Sauce

  • For preparing this sauce no cooking is needed. We only have to mix 4-5 ingredient in bowl and it is ready.
  • So firstly gather gochujang paste, soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, sesame oil and finely chop garlic.
  • Now take a bowl put all the above ingredients to it and whisk it properly
  • Voila! your sauce is ready. you can store this sauce in a air tight container in fridge for 3-4 days.

  • 2 tbsp Gochujang paste Korean chilli paste
  • 1 tbsp Rice Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Soy sauce
  • ½ tbsp Honey
  • 1 tbsp Sesame oil
  • 1 tsp Garlic finely chopped
